Another Deep South Master

Another architect doing great work in the South is Ken Tate from Louisiana.  Ken, who was born in Mississippi, studied at Auburn.  His work is spectacular.  Ken, as others I have covered, does an incredible job of reinterpreting historic works to fit the homes sites or simply what he sees as fitting.  Each of his projects are unique works that fit incredibly well into their settings.
While I have seen many of his homes in person, this Norman style house I have not but love it.

Here is one of his Creole Compounds he created:

And a Deep South Estancia in Jackson, Mississippi:

Another Creole style house:

I hope you love his work as much as I do.  You can find more of his projects at www.kentatearchitect.com and in his very impressive book, New Classicists, Ken Tate Architect.

I was lucky enough to have worked for Mr. Ken Tate when I finished my masters at Tulane. His design process always started with a "story" about the houses history, giving the design a firm foundation to develop a sense of place.

These houses are just breath-taking! Love how the architect and designer team was able to re-create such beautiful homes with details from the original period homes, from the flooring to the exposed beams inside, to the courtyard and romantic features. Thank you so much for sharing. Look forward to your comments!

The first home at dusk on the water is literally breathtaking. The second home looks a bit Spanish inspired. It reminds me of the California missions we have out here =)

Oh wow, the iron gates took my breath away. They're so lovely when used outdoors in "green" settings like that. When I had my custom iron doors made, that's also what I had in mind, so I did some landscaping and plant decorating on my own. I knew that iron doors belong in gardens, so that's where I had them installed. It's my favorite part of the house now!

The most popular flowers were lilies, daisies, lilacs, tulips and daffodils. Talk of growing flowers is apt to seem ridiculous to most people under thirty. There are surely more exciting and substantial goals to set our eyes on than the gestation of small colourful temporary bulbs -- when, for example, we have romantic love to explore or professional life to succeed at.

But it is almost impossible to find anyone over 70 who does not care for gardening. By then, most people's ambitions will have taken a substantial hit: love or work will not have worked out in key ways. At which point the consolation offered by gardening starts to feel very significant indeed.

dok222 said...

Flowers become something to be cherished precisely because of their lack of exigencies or overt grandeur. The world beyond will always resist our efforts to bend it to our will, but in the garden, with effort, regular watering and some luck with the sun, we can for brief weeks be the midwives to something as visually seductive as it is consoling.

We are moved by the flowers' tender beauty because we know, by this stage, so much about pain and disappointment; we aren't sentimental so much as traumatised. We won't turn down this one of nature's gifts. It isn't the largest, but it may -- on a mild summer evening -- be very much enough.
